Safe to spend until payday
$732
That is $52 a day for the next 14 days.
- Take-home pay
- $2,000
- Bills before payday
- −$900
- Essentials for 14 days
- −$230
- Savings for this paycheck
- −$138
The math: $2,000 pay − $900 bills − $230 essentials − $138 savings = $732. Divide by 14 days to get the daily number.
What is a safe-to-spend number?
Your bank balance tells you what is in your account. It does not tell you what is already spoken for. Rent, a car payment or a subscription can come out tomorrow, and the balance looks the same until it does.
A safe-to-spend number fixes that. It starts with your paycheck and takes out, in order:
- Bills due before your next payday
- Essentials like groceries and gas, for the days until payday
- Your savings goal, so you pay yourself first
What is left is money you can use without borrowing from next week. For a longer walk-through, read the safe-to-spend number, explained.
How to use your safe-to-spend number
Run it on payday. That is when you know your pay and can see the bills ahead. If you are partway through a pay period, enter what is left of this paycheck as your pay.
Use the daily number for small choices. Coffee, takeout, a movie. If a purchase fits in today’s number, you can say yes without guilt.
Use the total for big choices. If something costs more than a day’s share, check it against the total. Spending it now means less for the rest of the pay period.
Update it when things change. A surprise bill or an extra shift changes the answer. Run the numbers again.
Safe to spend calculator FAQ
What does safe to spend mean?
Safe to spend is the money you can use for anything you want before your next paycheck. It is what is left after your bills, your essentials and your savings goal are set aside.
How is safe to spend different from my bank balance?
Your balance shows what is in the account right now. It does not know that rent or a loan payment is due next week. Safe to spend takes those out first, so the number you see is money that is not already promised.
Which bills should I include?
Include only the bills that will be charged before your next payday. Rent, utilities, phone, insurance, loan payments and subscriptions all count. Bills due after payday come out of the next paycheck.
Why are essentials and savings monthly but bills are not?
Groceries and gas happen every few days, so the calculator takes the share for the days until payday. Savings works the same way: it sets aside this paycheck’s share of your monthly goal. Bills are fixed amounts on fixed dates, so you enter the exact total due.
What if my safe-to-spend number is negative?
A negative number means this paycheck does not cover your bills, essentials and savings goal together. Lower the savings goal for this period, look for a bill you can move or cut, or trim essentials. Then run the numbers again.
I get paid on irregular days. Can I still use this?
Yes. Pick the date of your next expected payment, and enter what you have left to live on until then as your pay. The calculator works for any number of days.
Do you save the numbers I enter?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Superfin.
